The more materialistic science becomes, the more angels shall I paint. Their wings are my protest in favour of the immortality of the soul. - Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98) These richly coloured Christmas cards reproduce angelic imagery from great names of the Arts and Crafts movement. They mix designs from paintings, ceramics, stained glass and illustrations. With elegant musical angels, c.1861-62, from a decorative organ case at St Martin-on-the-Hill, Scarborough by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908); and details from a stained glass panel by glass-painter James Egan (1849-c.1920), which graced the showroom of Morris & Co. c.1919. Plus ‘The Star of Bethlehem’, an illustration by Sir Edward Burne-Jones; and a design for a tile by William Morris, 1866: both from the collection of The Birmingham Museum. Made exclusively for Museum Selection.
