The British Museum "Idleness never grew in my soil." - Mrs Mary Delany (1700-88) Floral cards reproducing the intricate detail and rich colouring of six of Mrs Mary Delany’s (1700-88) exquisite paper collages. This striking collection of still life pictures includes narcissus, primula, rosa gallica, opium poppy, rhododendron and passionflower. Each paper collage was created on a dramatic black background and annotated with the Latin and common names for the plants. Observed from nature and cut by hand, Delany filled ten albums with almost a thousand botanical collages from 1774-82. Beginning the craft aged 72, she described it as ‘a whim of my own fancy’; the albums are now a prized treasure of the British Museum.
