Exeter Cathedral Replica of a goblin corbel from the medieval carvings found upon the misericords and supporters within the choir stalls of Exeter Cathedral. This replica was produced from a mould taken directly from the original medieval carving. Completed in 1400, Exeter Cathedral boasts the longest uninterrupted medieval stone vaulted ceiling in the world. Prayers in the early medieval church were said standing with uplifted hands, the old or infirm could use a misericordia (literally 'pity of the heart' to create an act of mercy), also known as a misericord. When a set was folded up the undersides had a small shelf, a misericord, allowing the user to lean against it, slightly reducing their discomfort. Like most other medieval woodwork in churches, they were usually skilfully carved and often show detailed scenes, despite being hidden underneath the seats, especially in the choir stalls of the choir around the altar.
