When it flowers in July Clematis flammula can be distinguished from other varieties of Old Man's Beard by its sweet almond smell as well as its dainty white blooms. Once this stunning display is over the hardy climbing shrub produces striking seed heads ensuring it remains appealing long into the autumn. Although its foliage is vigorous the plant can be cut back to the ground annually to minimise the maintenance required. This technique is particularly appropriate when Fragrant Virgin's Bower is grown through other plants in borders although it also makes a fantastic climber in its own right. Height: 5m (16'4); Spread: 1m (3'3); Pruning group: 3.
