All mattresses have a fire retardant finish applied for safety reasons, dependent on the type of mattress this can take longer to disperse. Typically mattresses with memory foam within their makeup will soak up the retardant more than just traditional fillings due to their properties.
The chemicals used are totally harmless and have been fully tested prior to use. The smell should disperse within a week.
